Jamaican Cuisine at Summerwind

Weekly, a truck carrying fresh vegetables and fruits grown locally arrive in the scheme (neighborhood). The availability is according to what is in season.

Mangoes season is in June through August. More Jamaican foods are: Pineapples, bananas, grapes, star apple, passion fruit, soursap, jack fruit, Jamaican apple, custard apple, water coconut, sugar cane, avocado, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, yam, carrot, callaloo, plantain, green banana, coco, ackee, cassava… to name a few.

On Sundays the ice cream truck comes around. Sometimes the “greens man” (the vegetable man) delivers on his bicycle in the scheme.

Meals are served family style!
Breakfast will be served at 8:30 am & Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm.

Breakfast Samples

  • Plate of fresh seasonal fruit
  • Brewed Jamaican coffee, peppermint tea, or bush tea (local bush plant including wild basil, fever grass and serisee to mention a few)
  • Juices made from carrot, pineapple, sorrel, passion, papaya and orange
  • Blue Mountain Coffee

American

  • Eggs made the way you like them. Omelets, made with onions, sweet green pepper and tomatoes.
  • Pancakes or French toast served with homemade syrup.
  • Bacon

Jamaican

  • Cornmeal porridge made from cornmeal, coconut milk, sugar and spices.
  • Steamed fish and vegetables
  • Fry plantain, johnny cakes made from flour, sugar, baking powder, home rendered coconut oil and then fired.

Dinner Samples

  • Fresh green salads served with homemade dressing.
  • Pasta and potato salads
  • Rice and peas (peas – red kidney beans) cooked in coconut milk and served with Jamaican spices.
  • Jerk Chicken, marinated chicken in jerk seasoning and grilled on a wood fire.
  • Julienne assortment of vegetable, carrot, cabbage, bok choy, chocho and onion
  • Red snapper and other local fish prepared with marinate roasted, baked and Jamaican escovietched which is a fried and seasoned fish.
  • Fresh caught Lobster prepared on the open grill or sautéed in a run down cooked sauce when in season. (Season is December – February), available out of season at market price.
  • Stewed Beef with vegetable and seasoned rice
  • Curry goat or brown stewed goat
  • Conch salad or fried conch, this is the meat inside the beautiful conch shell you may find on a snorkeling trip.
  • Spaghetti and Salad

A fresh made dinner will be waiting for you upon your arrival at “Summerwind.”

Desserts

  • Cake and Ice Cream
  • Key Lime Pie
  • Molasses Cookies made from local molasses.
  • Sweet potato pudding

There will be space provided for your choice of alcoholic beverages and snack foods that you may want to bring along.
